EVDO Problems

I am using a PC5220 card in my Dell X300 laptop. I've been using
1X-EVDO in the DC metro area for a few months now. Initially, it was
beautiful and just screaming fast. Using testmy.net, I've received
speed scores of 11x a 56K connection. Not bad for wireless.

I've also used it in 1XRTT only mode. Still worked fine, with speeds
of 2x a 56K connection.

Then, things began to degrade. The signal quality started dropping to
almost zero in areas (such as my office and home) where I previously
had 5 bars of service. EVDO started dropping back to 1XRTT
frequently. I started getting dormant more and more. I lost my
signals frequently. Sometimes, moving my laptop just a matter of
inches would improve the signal greatly; other times, it didn't help
at all. Then, just to confuse things (like yesterday), I suddenly get
5 bars again with no apparent cause.

The problem got so bad that my corporate VZW rep replaced my card.
Not much difference. Right now, I'm running the latest software of
2.5 (downloaded from audiovox.com). However, I started having this
problem before I upgraded the software.

Has anyone else seen this problem? Got any ideas?

Or, has Verizon just overextended this service so much that it can no
longer keep up with the demand?

Thanks.

Don

The speed you get with 3G, including 1xEVDO, depends on how much usage
there is in your sector at any given moment. Unlike cable modem or
xDSL, a 3G carrier cannot control how many people try to use a shared
resource at a time. If too many people try to download a video or a
large file at any given time in your sector, you will experience
degraded service or blocking. VZW may have its network engineered to
deny access to additional users when bandwidth is being used intensively
in order to avoid slowing it to a crawl.

Didn't he say his signal strength went to zero? Usage should not degrade the
actual RF signal.

This guy's site has some info http://www.evdo-coverage.com/. He says
that the 2.5 MCM may not work properly with cards older than the P8a
revision. If you open MCM, you can open help to see which card you have. I
have a P8 and have not upgraded to MCM 2.5. I did download VZAccess which
appears to work fine, but it appears more cumbersome to use. I've been on
the road in the hurricane area and have been sticking with MCM 2.3 as it
works and its easy.
