I'm speccing up a new PC and have found one that I like that comes in on budget.

It comes with an Athlon 64 processor and an ASUS K8V-MX Athlon 64 Mainboard - 1600MHz SB, 2x IEEE 1394, LAN, 2x SATA motherboard.

I am also arranging ADSL connectivity for this new computer but have read that VIA motherboards should not be combined with USB ADSL modems as there is a power consumption problem.

Is my motherboard a VIA one and is the advice right?

TIA

That is a via board. As to the rumours about usb, I dont know. Personal preference is for Nforce chipsets, but that is largely due to the one chip chipset config. It keeps the system a lot cooler.

I'd get an nForce3 or nForce4 board.
