As a few of you know, I'm looking into buying an amd 64 3000 and some type of decent mobo and graphics card to accompany it. I can't really afford much to buy those components new, but a friend of mine suggested I try ebay. I've found a number of auctions selling barebone amd 64 systems - sometimes with 3 year warranties, etc. Can I get your guys' opinions on this? I know if something seems to good to be true it probably is, but some of these look like they have potential... (at least to my untrained eye...)

Any insight? Are these just low-quality brands?

E-Bay is a good place to buy and sell used stuff but not the best place to buy new. Especially bareboned systems unless you know exactly what parts are in there. Shipping often becomes outrageous too. You can buy refurbished stuff from NewEgg and several others. You can buy used from the Classified thread here. That said, I buy and sell a lot of stuff on E-Bay.

I can build the first system from newegg.com for $333, it is selling on ebay at the moment for $334 and that is not its final price. Sounds like a bit of a pants deal to me.
If you want a budget system make a post on here asking people to make the best price/performance ratio system they can for your budget.

Insight? Ebay is a sucker site for people who don't know what to get and don't know how to shop.

Absolutely right Crash. With so many E-stores out there competing for business it's pointless to look on ebay unless you really like gambling your time and energy trying to win a bid. You can usually find rock solid deals on reputable e-stores who have faster and cheaper shipping, sometimes even free shipping.

It's a buyer beware world. ;)

I dunno, Ebay is good if you know exactly what you want and no what it is worth brand new. I got a great AMP of there for waaay less than it was worth + I got my 2.6c very cheap aswell.

I would suggest asking in the CPU forum for people to help you build a good system and give us a price range to work with... we will sketch up a good system for you in no time, and that way you don't even have to worry about gambling on ebay. I know that Crashman already suggested this, but I hadn't seen your post for help yet, so I thought I would tell you again.
