Do you think it would be better for the community if best answers were based upon votes from the community instead of the decision of one single person? That way there might be more solved threads?

It is about solving OP's problem regardless of what we think, therefore OP should give the best answer.

I just thought it would help the community to spot solved threads.

It could potentially be beneficial to have a "community choice"-type award for a post in addition to the best answer selected by the OP. That way other helpful answers will still be recognised and this might be especially useful for people who come across the thread with a similar, but not identical, issue. The OP should still select the best answer as it applies to them, however. The community can't tell the OP which answer has solved their problem. Only the OP can know that.

I feel like I've actually seen this sort of system before.

Moderators can also select a best answer if the need arises , however that is done rather late and happens when the OP forgets and doesn't come back or just doesn't care to do it. If a Mod looks at an old thread and feels a best answer is deserved then one can be selected.
