Choppy framerate in Starcraft 2

Hey guys, I have an AMD quad core at 2.4GHz, an nVidia 9800GT w/ 1GB video RAM, and 3GB of system RAM. Whenever I play Starcraft 2 online, my frame rate will drop to 5-8 fps when there's a modest amount of action on screen but my two friends in the game are still around 30 fps. Their PC specs are comparable to mine and I even set the graphics options to Medium. Even when there's little action on screen, I top out at 45 fps while they're at 60+ fps.

Any ideas what's causing the slowdown on my end? SC2 even broadcast a message to us that I was slowing the game down. I have the most updated graphics drivers. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

  1. There is a supposed heat issue. Try this

    The fix is easy – you just need to add the following lines to your “Documents\StarCraft II\variables.txt” file:

    frameratecapglue=30
    frameratecap=60

    SC2 is quite CPU heavy, but doesn't take advantage of more than two cores, so I'm guessing your 2.4 GHz CPU might be contributing to this.
  3. Thanks for the input, guys. At this point, I'll try anything.

  5. just a thought, but make sure your anti-virus software is not running because my comp comes to a crawl when it starts scanning.
  6. make sure you update direct X - i just updated as i was having low fps issues since 1.02 update with a high spec system

    went from 8-15fps on ultra to maxed on the 30fps max that is in the starcraft2/variables.txt file

    still running cold and unmodified - love high spec
