laserjet 4000 and soft fonts

I have a laserjet 4000 that is having problems printing bullets and
other fonts. I have tried to change the pcl font source to soft but it
won't let me. Instead the pcl font source is internal. when I go into
the printing menu, then pcl font source, but when I hit the value or
select button nothing happens. According to the manual my options are
internal, soft, and dimm slot 1, 2, or 3. The printer is a laserjet
4000n, product number c4120a, with 4mb of memory.
