What board should I get for a athlon 64 processor? Don't wanna spend more than $100 unless really necessary. Also, I have a pentium 1.6 ghz processor, would a athlon 64 3200 be a lot better than that?

The A64 will easily outperform the Pentium 1.6 Ghz.

Try one of the s754 mobos with NF3 chipset for the sub-$100 price range. They have the best price/performance ratio right now.

Another option are some of the less expensive s939 boards. Here are some fo the boards at newegg:

Okay, page didn't work, go there on your own. Do a search for Socket 939 Mobo's. They'll come up in price ascending order from lowest to highest priced.

Ok, to look at these boards you need to go to this Newegg page:
<A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/manufact.asp?catalog=22&DEPA=1" target="_new">http://www.newegg.com/app/manufact.asp?catalog=22&DEPA=1</A>
and on the left side under advanced search, select "NVIDIA NForce3 Ultra" under the system chipset option. This will pull up the s939 boards. For the s754 boards select "NVIDIA NF3 250" under the system chipset.

If you want to go fast and cheap and no heavy overclocking, then socket 754 is the way to go. You have to watch for the dimm slots on the board you want. Most only has 2 slot, so, you'll have to drop a memory stick if you buy one of them. I found the <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-128-259&depa=1" target="_new">Gigabyte</A> , the <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=13-123-225&DEPA=1" target="_new">epox</A> and some more <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=property&DEPA=1" target="_new">here, at newegg</A>. I have no idea about the quality/performance of the board I tell you, as I have never used/worked with.

But nforce3 board perform almost equally each other, so you should not worry for that. nforce3 is a good chipset. There are VIA boards, but, even if I never had really any problem with them, I think that nforce3 is just a better overall product.

The A64 3200+ socket is 200 MHz faster than its 939 counterparts, so you'll end up winning here.

fixed some links...and typo

he can better select the socket he want to use under "CPU socket type" at the left...this will return more choice. he can search for socket 754 and 939

CPU Sockettype will give him more choices, but he was requesting what boards I would recommend. I recommend the nForce chipsets, so i told him how to search for those...
