Southbridge vs. Northbridge?

What is the difference between the Southbridge and the Northbridge and what is their purpose?

  1. The northbride acts as a hub connecting the AGP and RAM to the CPU. It connects all of the fastest components. The southbridge connects all other peripheral devices to the northbridge (things like USB, PCI, etc.).
