Budget: $300 (yeah that's right, $300)

I am trying building the cheapest possible computer. This person only wants to basically use the computer as a glorified typewriter and to burn CD's. My given budget was $300, but I refuse to downgrade from 512 to 256MB of RAM (which pushes the budget over 300 but oh well). Spot any stupidities on my part in the component selection (periphals not needed - i.e. monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc)? -

And the sign says "You got to have a membership card to get inside" Huh
So I got me a pen and paper And I made up my own little sign</pre><p></font color=red>

I would spend just $7 more for a "just pc" auroral beige case with L&C 350w power supply. 250 watts is a little low. I've used this ps in several builds, and it's stable and reasonably quiet.

wow. good job. I always thought that it cheaper to buy a low system from dell or HP instead of building.
Anyway there is one other thing you didnot mention.
OS? Do you already have it? If you don't it might change things.

I'd rather have an XP-2500+ Barton than that 2700+ for 30 bucks less. I'd spend the extra 30 bucks on a better board and "clock it".

Abit IS7 - 3.0C @ 3.6ghz - Mushkin PC4000 (2 X 512) - Sapphire 9800Pro - TT 420 watt Pure Power
Samsung 120gb ATA-100 - Maxtor 40gb ATA - 100
Sony DRU-510A - Yellowtail Merlot
