Ok here is my problem. One day when my computer went into Windows, I noticed that my Norton AntiVirus 2004 had an X on it. So i clicked on the icon and tried to engage Auto-Protect. But then it said: "Norton AntVirus has encountered an internal program error. (4002,517)". So, without even thinking to go to the site for support, I uninstalled Norton. So then I restarted my computer like it requested. When I boot up again and tried to reinstall it, I get an error, again: "Norton AntiVirus 2004 installation has failed. Do you want to try to install again?" . So I tried reinstalling it a million times, but still, no results. Then I finally consindered getting support from Symantec. But there solutions did not work for me. I tried everything they said, still no results. I am thinking of my friend to format my computer, again. Because I was thinking something got REALLY screwed up when I uninstalled it whill it had the program error. But I don't want to format yet because I want to see any other solutions that this forum might give. I am totally paranoid without Norton AntiVirus. I am WIDE open to the internet. I need your help. Thank you.

AVG. Norton is a bloated program.

I think Norton blows. I've been using AVG (free) for a while. I hear there's a new free AV out called AniVir that's better than AVG.

Get it here <A HREF="http://www.majorgeeks.com/download955.html" target="_new">http://www.majorgeeks.com/download955.html</A>

My experience with Norton (which I haven't used for several years) was that the only way to uninstall it completely was to reformat. It seems like it integrates itself so deeply in Windows that there is no other way...and when you try to install it without a reformat it finds these remnants of the previous install and fouls up.

There are many decent free AVs out there that will keep you protected from most viruses that arrive via email. I use Avast and Zonealarm and scan weekly with AdAware, Spybot S&D, and the Avast.

The only norton worth using is the symantec antivirus Corprate edition. But that is so expensive it isn't worth it for a home user. I recommend avast if you can't afford nav corp, I put it on all my clients machines I have to rebuild. It does a fairly good job for being free.

Symantec has/had a utility on their site for screwy Norton uninstalls. I had to run it on a couple PC's so I could install the Corporate Edition client. If you search the site you should be able to find it.

I had the same problem a while back. I did a search on symantec's site for "manual uninstall" printed off the 5 or so pages and followed them to a tee. Worked for me but be careful. The instructions tell you to go into your registry and delete some of the keys. Make sure you backup you registry before doing this.
