General help for a Doom Dummy

I have a Doom 95 CD and have been playing with no trouble. I use winXP and
would like to know if I can get some help with any add-ons to make it more
fun and easier to use.
Is there a better launcher that the win95 one I'm using? I can't minimize
the game, or switch wads or levels without shutting it off and restarting
it?
I guess I'm just asking for some tips to make it play better and easier in
XP, and also any cool additions that I might install to work with it.

Plenty. You can pick the one the other poster provided you (ZDoom), or you
can take a look at the entire list.

IIRC, switching wads is only found in prBoom and a few other ports. Even
if ZDoom supports it, it doesn't seem to be an obvious method to load it.
However, they should all support minimizing (or at least Windowed mode).

Actually, you can switch levels with the IDCLEV## cheat. Repalce the
numbers with the map you want to proceed to. (e.g. IDCLEV24 would bring you
to E2M4).
