How much and how fast memory can this actually support? The official specs say one 333MHz module (other two slots reduce speed). But I have heard rumors that the latest version actually supports 400MHz, asus just doesn't want to cannibalize their other products.

Also, I don't know what they mean by "module". I actually have two 512MB sticks and my CPU is 333MHz and it works fine. (Haven't actually benchmarked it though.)

If I upgrade my CPU to 400MHz, will I have full 400MHz speed to my two sticks of RAM (they are 400MHz)?

Go look up your mobo. You'll see it supports 400Mhz processors.

Since your two sticks of ram are 400Mhz you're all set on the memory side if you do a cpu upgrade.

Sorry to be dense, but I don't see any 400MHz FSB processors on the supported list. The fastest CPUs I see are:

Athlon XP 3000+(333 MHZ FSB)(Model 10)(Barton)
Sempron 3000+

I am told all Semprons are 333 MHz FSB.

You have a via KT400 board. It will support DDR400, but only up to 2 banks ( 2 pieces of single sided, or 1 piece of double sided ram). It supports PC2700/DDR333, but only up to 4 banks.
With most KT400 boards, it was possible to run the old (multiplier unlocked) XP3200, by setting the multiplier to 11.5, and raising the fsb fron 166, to almost 190.
You can only do that with the XP-M chips of today, since they are still multiplier unlocked.
Before you try this though, it is a good idea to make sure your bios supports unlocked multipliers.

Oops!! I put in a7N8x instead of A7V8X.. you're correct about what the ASUS site says.

Is there a hardware (wire) hack?

I sure wouldn't try anything that high with an 8X graphics card. Then again, I wouldn't put that new a graphics card on that old a board. Up to a 9500pro should be okay @ 75mhz agp.

Boy do I feel dumb. I don't want to overclock anything, I just want to know if the mobo supports an Athlon XP 3200+ out of the box.

Also, I have a recent NVidia 6600GT video card. Are you saying this mobo doesn't go with this card, or did you mean only when overclocking?

What would be a good mobo for an XP 3200+?

No, your mobo wont support an xp3200+@ stock. It will support the 333 fsb version of the xp3000. You or I couldn't tell the difference, without benchmarks.
Your mobo is an 8 times agp setup. It will support all agp cards made in about the last 5 years. With the 6600gt and any chip as fast or faster than an xp2500+, you should have reasonable framerates on all of todays games. You should also be good for about 2 years, because with the shift to dual core, gaming chips will not be going anywhere for a while.
