Do you really think that if the x800xl would have need more than what PCIe spec has to offer, ATI would have done something about adding a connector on the card itself??

Sure, if you have a cheap crap PSU, your system may not even power up, but that aint Soltek's or ATI fault.. but your's that decided to go cheap on the most important part for modern system stablility, a GOOD psu.

Pat's right - the PSU is the key. The cards specs are designed to run on the PCIe bus and will as long as you have a good PSU. What PSU do you have?

I have not purchased any other of the components yet.
what is a good recommendation, obviously it does not need the 24pin connector. maybe around $60 ?

If there's ONE place that I would not skimp in building a PC today it would be the PSU. It is the heart and soul of any computer and without it you have nothing. I still recommend getting ATX12V v2.0 and here are some possibilities:
1. <A HREF="http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103935" target="_new">Antec Smartpower 400W</A>
www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103459 for $59. The Truepower is the better lineup, but this still a good product.
2. <A HREF="http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103459" target="_new">Enermax EG425P-VE 420W</A> for $76.
3. <A HREF="http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=270402" target="_new">Enermax 535W Whisper II model EG565P</A> for $94 shipped.

I'd personally go with the Whisper two - great deal for the money.
