How fast should messaging be?

I notice that sometimes messages are delivered very quickly and other
times it seems to take a minute or two. Is this caused by network
traffic or what?

TIA

Some of the URGENT messages I send to my husband don't get to him
until the next day. I really wouldn't be too concerned about a minute
or two.

You might want to call CS and let them know. Messages should appear on the
phone quickly.

Just out of curiosity, are those "urgent" messages that get lost things like
stop at the store and bring home milk/bread/diapers/etc?
My SO used to message me to bring home dog food.. I claimed I never got em
till the next day :)

Ideally, within 10-15 seconds, but I've had messages take 6-8 hours or
more to be delivered. It's been a while since one was that late,
though.

Does anyone have an explanation for this inconsistency? Is it just
network overload? It seems hard to believe that the net could be
overloaded for 6 - 8 hours.

The delay can occur anywhere along the route of the message. Although
in many cases it may be VZW's problem, often it isn't. If I send an
e-mail from my desktop computer to my handset, it has to go through my
ISP's connection, then to their backbone provider, then to my web
hosting provider's e-mail server, then back out to the net to find
it's way to VZW's servers, where it will hopefully make it to my
handset. Have one of those paths temporarily backed up, and the
message will be delayed.

Do you notice the delay at certain times of the day or on certain days
more often than other times? I notice SMS sometimes runs slower here
between 6-9PM on Friday evenings. That sounds like a VZW network
traffic issue to me.
