Can I add another wireless router to my home network and get it to talk to
the first one? My objective is twofold. First, I would plug the second
router into the NIC of a desktop and use it to connect to the network.
Second, I would like to use the second router as a range extender to fill in
some holes.

If I can do it, any guidance on setup?

Thanks,

Ian

You don't need a router. Buy a wireless bridge, this connects to your
router (via wifi) and connect the desktop PC to the ethernet port of the
bridge.
Setup is pretty simple, the bridge will have an utility for you to
select which AP within range you want to connect to.
