I'm trying to keep my nearly-silent system, well, nearly-silent. I'm
looking to upgrade my GeForce 440 with a faster card that can play
Half-life and Doom3 well, but looking for something quiet, preferably
without a fan.

Any experinces out there?

Athlon 2400+XP, 512MB.

Just got my brother-in-law a Rosewill Radeon 9600/256 MB RAM. No fan.
Runs HL2/CS Source.

Works great. Get it from Newegg for about $80. I payed for express
saver, but got it next day SOMEHOW.

The 128 and 256 versions are practically identical in price, and 256 MB
of RAM is useless in this tier of VGAs, but more could be better.

By the way, there's a 64-bit 9600 on there as well for around $60. Avoid
that-- doesn't have the speed to handle Doom III or HL2. Also, even
though the 9600XTs are faster (256-bit), they are a but more spendy
($140) and DO have fans.

The Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Ultimate is a fanless design.
Should be happy with Doom3. I haven't got one myself though.

Get for a Zalman heatsink for whatever card you buy, I used one with my
Radeon 9700 without problems.

Just upgraded to a Radeon X800 Pro, I will probably get a heatsink for this
one as well.

Watch out. Some video cards with a large heat sink might take up two slots of
space on the motherboard. The heat sink might make the video card fat enough
to need the extra space.

That is true it was quite big with the heatsink on, so if you have something
in the PCI slot next to it you may have to juggle things around a bit to
make space!
