Im going to build myself a new workstation and am looking for some advice, I will list the components I am thinking about getting so just let me know if there is any pitfalls/drawbacks/alternatives/recommendations.

Cpu: AMD athlon 64 X2 4400+
Mobo: DFI lanparty ut nF4 Ultra-D
Ram: CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (x 2)
HD: Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 160GB (x 2)
Case: Antec Performance I P160
GPU: geforce 6 series (havent decided which model yet)

I already have a psu (superflower 550w) and a monitor which I plan to continue to use with the new puter. Anyways I plan to upgrade this system with a PPU which I can put in the pcie x4 slot. Also I may upgrade it to 4 gigs of ram (1 gb sticks x 4) in the future if the need arises.

Alright so enlighten me with your wisdom! :p

I ended up getting an athlon 64 venice, and a 6600 256mb pcie gpu along with the rest of the stuff I listed (except x2). So this will be a massive improvement over my current system and I am set technology wise if I need to upgrade it in the future.

My budget was 1600, I ended up spending only 950 (including shipping). So I may or may not get an X2 depends on how well this cpu performs with my work (Im a game developer).

Is the video card a 6600GT? Because the guys here at THC recommend to get at least a 6600GT or a 6800 for gaming. And on the ATI side at least a 800XL.

Nothing is as easy as it looks

No its a regular 6600. I know the GT is a better performer, but in this case I was getting the card for its feature set and value, not necessarilly to get the most fps. Besides the GT version with the same specs (256MB ram, PCIE) is very rare, I could only find it selling in bundles of 2 (for SLI) and the price is crazy high.
