I just what determines which bios fits a certain motherboard.

Is it maybe the chipset used on the board or something else?

If it is the chipset. Would it work to update an Asus board with a bios that also works on an MSI board (providing they have the same chipset specs)?

The CMOS chips are only 35mm long. Any BIOS longer than this will not fit without the use of a BIOS compressor. If possible, take a tape measure and measure the BIOS before you try and install it.
