This is going to be my first build. I need a budget system for general purpose use. It won't be used for gaming extensively (may be occasionally). I do intend to upgrade this to dual-core CPU whenever they become mainstream and affordable.

Here are the the important components. Please let me know if there are any compatibility issues you are aware of before I buy them.

- OCZ ModStream 450W PSU
- ASUS A8N-E nForce4 Audio/GB-LAN/IEEE/USB/ (don't need SLI)
- AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 512K 90nm (Venice)
- ATI (Sapphire) Radeon X700 Pro 128MBDDR3/PCI-E/TV-Out/DVI(Retail Box)(I think this will be good enough for me)
- Patriot Signature Series 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory

Thanks in advance.

It looks OK, but you could get the EPOX nf4 Ultra for $108 at newegg, that's almost $20 bucks less than the ASUS and get a better video card, I know you said that ths x700 pro is enough for you but that's a nice system, I would get the best GPU I can get so it won't be the bottleneck.

Nothing is as easy as it looks

x700 for ocassional gaming is a fine VGA.

indeed, the extra 40 or so dollars would be worth it.

Im not a gamer so this may be out of line. Ive got both of those cards and as far as the benchies have gone for me, there is hardly any difference between the 700PRO and 6600GT. I would say that the GT edges the PRO but the thing that turns me off of the GT is the fact that ATI will hold up at the really high frequencies. My 6600GT craps out at an FSB of around 280 maybe 290. The 700Pro goes at least to 310.

Thanks for your suggetions.

I have also looked at some reviews. I am now going with eVGA 6600 GT PCI-Express graphic card instead of x700 Pro.
