How do I get my two PCs at home to see each other?

My problem deals with connecting two PCs directly by orange network cable (huge phone plug head kind). One has Window ME and the other XP installed. Tryed the windows disk to load on other pc thing, but no go. Help me, please!

Look at the two ends of the cable. Are the wires inside the ends in the same order from left to right? If so, you have the wrong type of cable. You need a cross over cable.

You need to have TCP/IP protocol enabled in your network properties. You need to have file and print sharing enabled too.

Finally make sure that both computers are assigned with the same workgroup, otherwise they won't speak to each other.
