I've only recently discovered a little gem called jDoom, and now have a
taste for playing the game that started my FPS addition all those years ago.
Problem is, I only have the Doom shareware WAD. Is there a site that hosts
the official wads (i.e. DOOMU.WAD or DOOM2.WAD), or would it be more
approprate to buy the collectors edition which has all the old games, which
doesn't sound like value for money given their age.
I apologise if this basically asks for piracy, but I'm basing my opinion on
the idea of the old games being classified as abandonware.
nah they're not free - having said that, you can probably get a copy
somewhere but the collectors edition @ about £10 ain't that bad anyway...
its old, but it ain't dead yet

Sounds a bit silly if you'll still have to pay to get the WADs
even if the sources of the game engine itself have been
released to the public...

That's what I was thinking too, but then you realise that the game data is
more important because it contains all the textures, sounds, weapons and
monsters that are necessary for the source to work. jDoom was made with the
source, but it's useless without the official WADs.

Just download the freeware Dooms and take .wads from there.
Btw. I hosted a month ago jDoom, but the dedicated support is not so
good. So I bored. And when I talk about dedicated server I talk about
command line hosting. You can start "listen" mode but then there is
standing servers dead man all the ****ing time.
Anyway. jDoom rocks! I'll host it again if there comes better support
for dedicated server.

Not really. The game engines means you can play any 3rd-party WADs.
But if you want to play the original WADs from ID Software or Raven, you pay
for them.
I see no reason why programmers and artists don't get paid for their
labours.
After all, everyone here is (or will) do a job right?
And if you expend significant effort creating something, you wish to be paid
right?

jDoom plays this games with todays computer with OpenGL or DirectX
graphic and sound. And for better looking you can add jDoom Resource
Pack from address: http://modelyard.newdoom.com/jDRP/jDRP.shtml
you can get it all: doom1, doom2, ultimate doom, final doom, tnt & plutonia on
one CD at wal-mart for under $10
