Hi, as i was looking at the asus motherboards, those of chipset 945 to 955 they mentioned in the specification area the "Silicon Image 3132 Controller". Silicon Image 3132 Controller, i don't really understand what it is good for. I think one of the members said its used for configuring Raid controls. So without Silicon Image 3132 Controller, Raid is not possible, because i think if i read right, in the intel website, intel mentions Intel Matrix Storage technology, which i believe explains how raid 0 and 1 and others configurations can be used. so are these two the same, or i'm i confusing them. if they are the same, which is better and why? thank you all.

It's only the premium 955 that has the SI sata. The good thing about it is that it has an external, hot swapable port. Inlcuding the external connection, it is possible to connect up to 6 sata drives, and 2 ata ide drives. More than enough for anyone's storage needs.
I'm afraid that wusy made a mistake. You can not set up a raid array across 2 controlers.

The SI controler has nothing to do with the raid5. That's all done through the s bridge. Since one of the SI ports is an external connection, it probably cant do raid at all.
I think the ICHR7 can only do 4 drive raid5.

The Si3132 is a SATA controller used for add-in PCI cards, basically it gives you 2more SATA ports. What they have dont here is rather than put it on a PCI card they have stuck it on the motherboard and let it communicate via the PCI bus.

This is far cheaper than re-designing the entire southbridge to accomodate 2 more SATA ports.

no, the asus P5LD2 Deluxe (which is the 945p) also has it.

The 955 is a much better board, the P5WD2 Premium is the best of the bunch by far. If you only have two HDs, then the Intel Matrix Raid will give you the ability to do RAID 0
RAID 1 or 0+1. Matrix RAID is the only technology that I know of that will do 0+1 on two HDs.

If you trying to decide which board to get then tell us what you will be doing with the system.
