What a ride! Hah! It's taken me from release day till just a few
minutes ago to finish playing Doom3 one time through. It's definitely
one lone soldiers walk to Hell and back. But what a walk. Despite
that so many seem to be disappointed in the game overall, and that some
hated it, I've thoroughly enjoyed playing Doom3. LONG before I was
halfway through, I gave up playing through without getting my Marine
killed. If I did, I started over. At the third restart, I said to hell
with this, I'm keeping on now. That's good, cause I ended up getting
killed a LOT later on!
I found it a very interesting, engrossing game. I kept the sound
turned up, lots of chatter, noises, things going on all around. Most of
the time, some sound would draw my attention to either demons spawning
or something going on somewhere close. This made it a lot more
realistic, very easy to get caught up in. I never thought this a
boring game. A little intense at times but never boring! There was
just enough Really Cool Stuff done thematically in the game to make it
generally "WOW!" when I saw it or did it or it happened, whichever .
Like most, I too would have enjoyed more open space stuff and outdoors
stuff. But I really can't complain at all about what I DID get. I'm
very happy that the Boss sequences never looked nor felt 'arcady'. I
was sure glad of a good supply of 'little monsters' at the end so I
could use the Soul Cube quicker!
For me, this game played out like a good SciFi/Horror movie. The plot
and story thickened overall as the game progressed. There were a
number of unexpected things put in the game that really gave depth to
the story. Some of these were visual only, some audio only, and some a
mix. Discovering these things simply lent more to the immersive quality
of this experience. "My baby!" and the footprints. The woman that the
Lost Soul ripped out of while I watched. My first meeting with Pinky
(yep, I died). The first Vagary. Having to interact with controls and
machines. Most of the time while fighting. Oh how I WISHED for a
railgun! LOL! For me, this was a really great game. I am not
disappointed and have no regrets buying it. I only wish I could have
played it in max res and Ultra quality. I'll be able to next week when
MY little 6800 GT arrives It'll be just in time for a replay.
To ALL the folks at id Software, thanks so much for the game, and for
the emails! Yep, I found the brick. I knew from a.g.d. that it was in
there somewhere, but not exactly where. It was a pleasure seeing "id"
down there!
