Ok everybody I tell about DivX MPEG4 does the same thing to me. They act like they understand, think it is cool, ask me to burn them a demo, and then ask me "This will play in my standalone DVD player right?" ARRRRRRG! NO! It converts from DVD to a new format that can so far only be played on a semi-fast computer.

So the other day I'm reading a post on SVCD and thinking hey this will or could play on a standalone DVD. I went to my usual sorce (doom9) and got instructions on how to make SVCD's but neither doom nor myself own a regular standalone DVD player to test our work. What needs to be done to make a SVCD or VCD play in a regular DVD player?

I have been trying to do the same thing. I have a PC DVD player but not a stand alone player. I would be interested to see if someone knows how do-able this is. Also this might help? =>http://www.pinnaclesys.com/aboutus/NewsMessage.asp?id=372

I went hunting about for the answer to this question and didn't like what I found out. ATI uses software written by a third party. This Software comes with a SVCD mode but ATI has disabled it. The information I found mentioned that even if you set up every control available to you to match SVCD specs that it the result will still not be VCD compatable because of settings that you cannot get to with standard software. The page did say there are work arounds in the form of additional software but it was over my head since I am not using any of the software they are. If you find a simple way of recording to SVCD let me know.

Not all DVD player will play SVCD. Some dont even play CDR media. http://www.vcdhelp.com mentioned earlier is a good site to learn about this. I can copy DVDs to XVCD format that will play on most DVD players (XVCD is like SVCD but it uses MPEG1 instead of MPEG2 - which doesnt look that good at lower bitrates). An 80 minute movie will fit perfectly on 2 CDRs and look much better than any VHS video, but not quite as good as the original on DVD.
There is a brilliant VCD/SVCD/XVCD encoder called Tmpeg that is freeware (Its better than any other encoder, freeware or not). Its a bit of a hit and miss affair at first, but after a few failed attempts you will get it to work. (Test on CDRW's)
Go here http://www.vcdhelper.com/convert.htm for simple instructions and the tools you need to convert a number of formats so it'll play on a standalone DVD player.
