Why can't I play Medieval II: Total War?

I surpass the minimum requirements, and I have no issue playing games like Oblivion and Fallout 3 (Oblivion having been released around the same time as Medieval II).

I'm trying to play the demo of Medieval II: Total War to see if I'm capable of playing the real thing before I go out and buy it. However, I get absolutely nothing but lag.

System requirements:
Windows 2000/XP/Vista
1.8 GHz Processor
512 MB RAM
11GB uncompressed free Hard disk space
128 MB DirectX 9.0c compatible Graphics card
DirectX 9.0c compatible 16-bit Sound card
8x Speed DVD-ROM drive

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, 2.6 GHz quad-core, 6 GB RAM and 256 MB/4.0 ps GPU yet on the lowest settings I still get nothing but lag.

I play all my modern games in windowed mode (1024x768), because my desktop isn't powerful enough to handle my monitor's native resolution.

I am confused on why you are saying you have to run games in windowed mode. Your machine specs are not slouchy. The 4200 is good for 1920x1200.

I find that I cause more lag trying to run games in a window. Do you run Oblivion and Fallout in windowed mode?
