This is where the ISP get to stick it to you. Actually if you have service with anyof them you can call in and say get the internet free for the month cause the system is down. I used to do that ALL the time with Southwestern bell. Seriously I had internet for a year and only payed for the ... well I didn't pay. They had issues and I always called it. It took me about 4~7 hours on teh phone with tech support and customer service, but I got free internet for a year. I got fed up with it and went over to Timewarner cable and it's much better. 2MB down and 256KB Up for $45 a month. No problems at all so far. hehe I used to get the basic 75 cable channels for free also, but it doesn't work anymore, I think they caught on to me. hehe I'm all about the free stuff.
given that cable only got wired up yesterday .. and then the whole cable system crashed... litterally. for the whole county. Cable TV came back fairly quickly, but the interactive side of things (down stream) still has not come back .
The ISP KNOW this, and have refunded me the instalation fee (for the cable modem) and tonight, they're going to refund the first moths payments.. (they dont know this yet... but theyre gonna)

you have to learn one of the golden rules of being a consumer.
your problem is their problem
phone them... email them... phone them again... make them hate the sound of your voice, to the point where they will personally get the CEO out to fix your line so that you dont call anymore.

erm. well it looks like your modem's not been initalised at our end. sorry.
so, my cable modem, which basically covnerts packets into a signal, then transmits it down a free chanel on the mail line, and then it's converted back into packets by your transmistion gear, has not been initailised at your end?
hang on, i'll just get someone to check the line.
(3 mins of hold music)
can you just reboot the machine for me...
(click, whir. buzz buz)
well, we can see your connection now... can you just check your settings for me.
They're all set to auto. just like you told me to last time.
however, this packet analyser is showing me that your DHCP server is killing my packets.
(4 mins of hold music) (then a DIFFERENT tech answers the phone

erm.. can i take your account number again.
xx.xxx.xxxxx.xxxx
hang on, i'll just activate your account. apparently it's been disabled for non payemnt.
you DO realise it was only installed yesterday.....
Sorry about that.. i think, given the inconvenience we can waive the instalation fee...
and...
... and this months payments. unplug yor modem, and then plug it back in in about 20 mins...
:-).
so basically the problem was that the care in the community gut that did the cable install for got to ring home and tell them that my account should now be turned on.
Telewest broad band. Prooving that care in the comunity works (Occasionally)

Well here's the thing. First you have to establish that the problem is on their end, then you call them. Let them know they have two problems, first your internet doesn't work, and second they need to find a way to compensate you.
