I need to get a new phone - must be tri mode. I'm considering Nokia
3589i, LG VX3200, and Samsung SCH-a650. I am really only interested in
two things - reliable ability to receive and place calls (with the
fewest drops), and the speech/sound quality of the calls.
I would really appreciate it if anyone with some genuine technical
expertise could help me decide between these models.

seriously, lots and lots of people are very happy with the LG vx6000,
you might as well go with it.

He did say tri-mode was a requirement?
I've had experience with LG's TM-510 and VX4400. Both were/are
very impressive on voice quality (both in and out) and signal acquisition/
retention.
By the way, could you get a VX4400 at a reseller like Radio Shack or
one of the others? These have turned out to be extremely solid phones.

I think you should be concerned with other things. LG phones have a
manner mode which shuts off the ringer and if you push it again, it
goes into silent mode.It is not just the # key which would be OK, it
is an outside key also. If you keep your phone in your pocket, it
will switch into these modes. Also, unless you set your phone to auto
answer, your LG phone will always need to be flipped open to answer
it. It is not a phone designed with a power user in mind. BTW, the lg
7000 does not have the outside buton feature. Even with earbuds
plugged in, you still need to flip open the phone and push a key. Food
for thought.

The Nokia 3589i has had excellent reviews concerning your requirements
in this and the Howard Forums.

"Silent" mode (like LG "Manner" mode) on Motorola flip phones cannot be
activated with the flip closed.
When you plug the headset into Motorola phones, and have "Headset/Auto
Answer" turned on, you don't have to do anything to receive a call (it
answers after one ring), and when the calling party hangs up, the call
is ended. Basically, no-hands operation. The auto-answer is in effect
only when a headset is plugged in; you don't have to turn it on and off.

'Manner mode' on the LGs that I have seen is vibrate, not silent..
On my Motorola V710 I can choose loud, soft, vibrate, vibrate and ring, and
silent modes, all with the side keys, without opening the flip.

Again, on the V710 you can set off, 2 seconds, 5 seconds, or 10 seconds time
to auto-answer with a headset (which also works with a bluetooth headset).

Yet another issue with the 4400 (which I own and find to be a very good
phone for signal retention etc), is that it will not remind you more
than once that there is a voice mail unless you set the reminder to
vibrate and remind - in which case there is no sound.

silent mode can definitely be activated with the flip closed on the 4400
- and it can be activated by accident very easily.
