ACTIONS TAKEN:
When I select HP MyDrive (from HP DVD) to view my HP
dvd630e information is says "HP DVD Writer 630c".
I own the HP DVD Writer 630e.

ISSUE:
Both Windows Device Manager and the DVD drive
Properties shows it as 630c and not 630e. Also,
the HP website makes no mention and has no instance of
the 630c on the product page. Also, the firmware update
downloaded after the installing the dvd630e is named
"dvd630c_ch16.exe".

My drive says all over the package it's a dvd630e. This is the model
that I registered with HP.

QUESTION:
- Is this normal for the HP DVD Writer 630e to identify itself as
"dvd630c" and NOT "dvd630e"?

- Shouldn't the firmware say "dvd630e_ch16.exe"?

- Can I apply this firmware update to my current hardware (dvd630e)?

FACTS:
Model: HP DVD Writer dvd630e
Product Number: Q6761A
Firmware Version: 9H11 (out of retail box)
PC: HP pavilion a500n
OS: MS WinXP Home SP2

Your current hardware identifies itself to the host system as the DVD
Writer 630c series drive, while the 630e and dvd630i nomenclature
refers to the particular enclosure and packaging involved. The 630e
is the 630c "core" with external mounting "garb", while the 630i
provides the same 630c "core" with internal mounting "garb". ("Core"
and "garb" might well not be the right terms, but these are the best
that I can think of right now.)

And yes, since you have a DVD Writer 630c "core", you should be able
to use the 630c firmware.

There is a web page available with various of the DVD Writer device
identification strings -- here is the direct URL, though this class
of URL is volatile and is subject to change:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?
lc=en&lang=en&cc=us&product=432775&dlc=en&docname=c00001838

I located this URL by traversing through to the DVD Writer support
information, should the web page happen to move.

The two relevent sections of the page behind that URL are:

---

DVD630 internal drive

HP DVD Writer dvd630i

Model# Q6759A

...

ID String: HP DVD Writer 630c

---

DVD630 external drive

HP DVD Writer dvd630e

Model# Q6761A

...

ID string: HP DVD Writer 630c

---

FWIW, the dvd630c_ch16.exe firmware release notes I am looking at within
the download area do specifically mention both the 630i and the 630e
models, as well as the DC5000 series packaging.

Thank you for your input. I should have realized this, but did not.
I did upgrade the firmware, a day or so after I posted when I figured
the 630e/c/i were the same hardware. Thank you again.
