All I wish is to be able to log on to the web (chatting and e-mail). What would be the min laptop for this? Will also be connecting through an appropriate cell phone when on the road.

Any advice?

Oh! What if I wanted the min laptop for DVD playback (nothing fancy)?

take care boys & girls :)

I have a compaq armada m700 that I could sell for $800 usd. The only reason I ask for 800 is to have enough to build a new comp for my gf (she's currently using it). It's a 700 Mhz laptop, 192MB ram, 12gb hdd, 4x dvd, floppy, built in 10/100 nic & modem. I think the screen size is 14" but I'm not totally sure it's 13 at least. I'll also include a carrying case. This is what my gf uses for school work and surfing the web. If I sell you this I'd need enough to build her a new pc. With 800 I can get an XP1600+, Shuttle minipc, cd-rw, and a new monitor for her. She's in a dorm so there isn't much room for a big pc. (that includes the shipping price) If you're interested let me know. If you want a cheap cheap laptop I may be able to find an old toshiba 133 with 16 or 32mb or ram and slap on win95. I've been able to find some like that for just $20 usd. If you just want an email machine that'd work good for you and it wouldn't hurt the wallet any.

I looked at AMD_cErT's site and it looks like some good deals. Go with that.

I crossed the line into insanity so long ago I no longer have any idea which way to go to get further from the line.

Reply to icy_oblivion

If your are looking into 3dgames the refurbs are probably not the best option, due to not really haveing any 3d support. For instance the 770Z tp has a 4meg trident 3d card which is crap, I have that notebook and upgraded it to 8meg, still crap. The dell latitude has 8meg ATI rage, that does 3d

No prob. do you want me to look for that toshiba for you? More likely than not it'd be a tecra 500 cdt or 510 cdt.

Well as long as they realise a 13.1 screen does not exist... its 13.3 at 1024x768 or 13.7 at 1280x1024

maybe 300mhz was the most produced?

Radio Shack sucks. Always overpriced. They never have exactly what I'm looking for. Plus you can't buy a goddam battery without them wanting your phone number.

Yeah .... next they'll ask for your SIN number and a blood sample. Thats the last time I ever buy some 2ft stereo cable that takes over 5min to do the purchase

Don't forget you will be paying at least twice what the cable is worth if you buy it from Radio Shack.

Well, it's bought!

I proly could have found the same thing at your place AMD-c, but you know I just had to touch the damn thing before buying it.

Dell P-2 400
docking station (with SCSI, 1 PCI...)
128 meg ram upgradable to 512 for $160
6.1gig HD
2 meg vid ...:(
13.1 Active display (ya they said 13.1)
56 k modem
sound
Dell CD- Rom
charger carring case
WinXP

$811 CAD
I know I said I would stop at 600, ...:)

The wife was happy, she does PowerPoint stuff

They had only 1 x 400 and 3 x 266, the 266 were $600
I figured the 400 with 100Mhz bus (is that applicable to laptops?) would be a vast improuvement. My 5 yearold has a bunch of kiddy games that she likes, some would not have run on a 266.

Got the internet ready phone as well...
Ah! Man! Do I have something to say about her...:)

the guys at that boutique said they would take care of things

they also said I could change the CD-Rom for a DVD, but I wonder if it would be resonable for DVD playback, don`t know much about that, playback quality would not have to be perfect, just no choppinest

PII 400 will be fine for DVD playback.
Just use a good DVD software for decoding.
