On my 6/2 Verizon Wireless bill there was a message stating:
---
A Better Way to Notify You When You Have a New Voicemail Message
Great News. In order to serve you better, we are changing the way we
provide you with
Voice Mail notification. Over the next few months, when you receive a
Voice Mail
message, a short text message (SMS) will be sent to your handset
alerting you that you
have messages. This SMS message will continue to provide the envelope
icon on your
handset as well as provide additional information about those messages
pending in your
Voice Mailbox. Notification will be sent free of charge and you will
still be able to receive
these SMS messages even if you have the SMS filter turned on. In some
areas you may
not receive this SMS message. The broken dial tone that you may
currently hear when a
new Voice Mail message is received will be discontinued. If you
require the broken dial
tone to continue, please contact Customer Service at 1-800-922-0204.
---

Has anyone actually seen this in action yet? It's been a "few months"
and I'm still getting the same old voice mail indicator.

Craig,
Verizon is putting a positive spin on a negative problem. They cannot
deliver a proper V/M indicator across their entire network, so they have
created a 'patch' that sends you a Text Message instead. I think it's a
step backward. While I get the text message in markets east of Indiana,
everywhere else the VMI works as expected.

I have not received this message. I'm guessing in your market they have
given up making it work the 'right' way, and making the 'patch' what you'll
receive locally as well.

In California I occasionally got the text message and called and had them reset
whatever they had to reset to get the VM indicator to display properly.

....in which case, you should complain. Text messages are rather more disruptive
than turning the VM indicator on.

I get a text message that has a count that looks like "Unheard - 1, Urgent -
0".

Apparently, Unheard pitched a shutout.

It started around the same time that I switched phones, so I thought it was
a function of the phone. Silly me.

I haven't had the broken dial tone in a few years. At one time we also heard
"you have an unplayed voice mail message" when making an outbound call.

Well I am in Upstate NY and I am looking at it now and I have a little
envelope showing on my handset and it went Beep-Beep while making a
call. I have not received a text saying I had a voice mail message. I
have seen a "Page message" where the person selected to leave a call
back number press 5. And my phone flashed the number.

My 4400 gives me a beep when I place or answer a call with a message
waiting, even if I didn't know there was a message waiting because the
system failed to deliver the notice, which is annoying but a whole lot less
so than on my Kyocera 2035a -- it would completely take over the display
and disable my ability to interact with the touch-tone/voice response
system I was often trying to call when this happened.

My market is New York City, which is usually one of their best in terms of
coverage and network upgrades. That's why I'm not sure why they'd switch
this market, since the VMI works perfectly fine here.
