I've got a little problem - for some time now I'm unable to set 640x480 in my Windows XP (Radeon X800Pro + Samsung 172x on DVI). While I don't need windows running in 640x480, many programs (like demos, or bink-in-exe videos) are fixed to 640x480 and refuse to run, or run with small image centered on black screen :(. I was able to select that resultion some time ago, I'm not sure when problem started. I've tried removing and reinstalling drivers for both card and lcd, it didn't helped.
One interesting thing is, after removing all drivers and rebooting windows, desktop was set to 640x480. However after setting resultion to 1280x1024, I was unable to go back to 640x480. But it seems both hardware and software is capable of displaying 640x480 resolution.
I should mention I have the same problem at my work, with Radeon 9520 card and 172x lcd, with the same software (Windows XP Pro, Catalyst 4.12).
Any suggestions, anyone?

its not a problem, xp doesnt show that res as an option because blind people shouldnt be using computers. you can set it to 640x480 in the advanced settings.

The 640x480 option is hidden, but avaliable.
Display Properites->Settings->Advanced->Adapter->List All Modes. But you shoud keep your desktop at your LCD's native resoultion.

Unlike CRT's, LCD's have a set number of physical pixels. So they have to be tricky when displaying anything other than thier native resolution.

When using program that runs at 640x480 XP is outputing at proper 640x480. If you had were using a CRT it would switch to 640x480.

Since you have an LCD it needs to convert it to its native resolution. You probably have some control in the LCD drivers as to how it does this. You should be able to change it to upscale the image rather than shrink it.
