Detecting HDD on Boot Up

I'v put together a PC from componants left over from previous PC's.

When it boots up, it does the POST and memory test etc, but then stops saying "Wait...".

However, if I press any key on the keyboard it detects the HDD's and continues OK.

Any ideas?

There are no other problems, it's just a pain making an extra key stroke.
All the componants worked in previous machines.
There are two HDD's on the primary IDE channel, but I get the same problem even if I disable one of them.
I've checked and double-checked that one is set to master and the other set to slave.
I get the same problem even if I use the floppy as the first boot device.
It does work with just the floppy connected and the HDD's disconnected.
