Hey there,
I recently built myself a brand new comp, which is running rock stable at the moment. The only thing that went wrong was that I couldn't connect my harddrive (Maxtor 33073H4, U-DMA-100) to my primary IDE connector on my motherboard. That connector only supports U-DMA-100. I was obliged to take the secondary connector (otherwise it would freeze, lock-up) which implies that I'm not getting everything out of my harddrive. It now runs DMA-33, I think.
Anyone familiar with this problem?
I'm running BIOS version 1004c. Should I flash?
Thanks

More details on your system please. OS?
You should be connecting the ATA/100 drive to the blue primary ATA/100 slot, not the blue primary ATA/66 slot.
Make sure the jumpers on the drive are correct. You must use the ATA/66/100 cable. Do not place any cards into PCI slot 2 which shares its IRQ with the ATA/100 controller.

My system:
A7V BIOS 1005a
30GB IBM Deskstar 75GXP in master primary ATA/100
Toshiba 12X/10X/32X DVD master primary IDE
LS120 slave primary IDE
Smart and Friendly 2/2/24 CDRW master secondary IDE
WinMe
Via 4in1 v4.25a
ATA/100 controller v16 build 25
For BIOS 1005a, you must enable Boot Virus Detection or you will get an error message.

I agree..check you are using all the correct cables, to the correct sockets, and that the HD jumpers set it to master (if it is new they should be fine). I say flash bios 1005a, and get 4in1 425 and promise build 33 (startup is faster). They are all at ftp.asuscom.de. Set up the bios so that you tell it what is in your comp. and where to boot off first etc. If there is still a problem, I'm sure it can easily be resolved...just give as much detail as possible on your system, so others can better understand.

Ok, here are my system specs.:
mainboard: Asus A7V
processor: AMD Duron 800Mhz
128 MB PC-133 Ram
Harddrive: Maxtor 33073H4, UPM5.400, Cach 512Kb, ms9, U-100 set to master
DVD-Rom: Toshiba 12/40.x, M1402, IDE set to slave
CD-Rewriter: Actima 4X4X24 set to master
VGA-Card: Elsa Erazor X2, AGP, GeForce256
Soundcard: Creative SoundBlaster Live-Player 1024 4th PCI slot
speakers: Creative 4-point surround
ISDN adapter: 5th PCI slot
If my harddrive was installed to the ata-100 connector it would freeze.
cheers,

Upgrade your BIOS to 1005a. You can download it from:
ftp://ftp.asuscom.de/pub/ASUSCOM/BIOS/Socket_A/VIA_Chipset/Apollo_KT133/A7V/

When does it freeze? Before or after the post? Can you access the BIOS before it freezes?
My system would freeze the first time I assembled it because I had the cable in backwards, so it is important to have the cables hooked up correctly and use the correct cable.
My suggestions:
HD master ATA/100
DVD master primary IDE
CDRW slave primary IDE
In the BIOS:
Advanced--PCI Configuration--Onboard ATA device First [Yes]
Boot--
1. Removable device [Legacy Floppy]
2. Other Boot Device [SCSI/Onboard ATA Boot Device]

In BIOS 1005a, there is also another setting for ATA Boot device first [Onboard ATA]--I can't remember it exactly.
Also in BIOS 1005a, you have to enable boot virus detection or you will get an error message.

I would also suggest putting your sound card into slot 3.
