I'm another new guy trying to install an HP All-in-One printer using
hplip.

I am running SUSE 9.1 on a DELL Dimension 4100 desktop.

My current Linux learning experience is to get my HP 7310 Officejet,
All-in-One, to function fully with Linux. The 7310 has wired network
capability and dual-page printing built-in.

This printer replaced a HP 6110 with dual-side printing mod, which worked
correctly using SUSE 9.1 & hpijs/CUPS. I have been unable to install the
7310 under HPLIP/CUPS. I currently have it installed as a network printer
under hpijs/CUPS, but the dual-side printing doesn't work.

Following http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/install.php#suse:

Step 1: Set up the Linux environment:
I have verified that all of the packages required for a SUSE installed
are installed.

Step 2: Download and install the HP printing software:
All appears to have gone OK.

Step 3: Add the printer:
Due to security features in SUSE, the printer must be added through YAST.

1. Use a USB cable to connect the printer to the computer or connect the
printer to a network.

2. Follow these steps to find the printer URI:
a. Open a console window.
b. Enter this command to find the printer URI:
$ /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp
c. Copy the printer URI.

The above command ($ /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp) resulted in the following
error. direct hp:/no_device_found "Unknown" "hp no_device_found"

Using KFIND "Find Flies" for /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp resulted in NO
files found. However, Konqueror shows a 32.9 KB file named hp,with Type
Executable @ file:/usr/lib/cups/backend. The file permissions are
root.

The SUSE install instructions also mention: Caveats

1. At configure time, if libsnmp and libcrypto are not found, HPLIP
network support will not be built. If this happens then only local USB
will be supported. 2. The HPLIP startup/shutdown script is Red Hat
(chkconfig) and LSB (install_initd) compliant. If your distribution is not
compliant the script may not work. 3. In order to get HPLIP to compile
with libsnmp on SuSE 9.1 you need add the following symlink for libcrypto.
ln -s /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.7 /usr/lib/libcrypto.so

It appears this is not contributing to my problem because
(linux:/home/jerry # ln -s /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.7
/usr/lib/libcrypto.so)

results in:
ln: `/usr/lib/libcrypto.so': File exists

I'm way in over my head. I'm sure that by now it's obvious I haven't the
slightest idea how to diagnose Linux problems. I am 69 yo and admit I my
brain doesn't learn as fast as it used to, but with a little help from
experienced Linux users and persistence on my part, I will learn enough
Linux to make it do what I need.

What am I overlooking?

will appreciate any suggestions offered about finding this problem.

Thanks
