Apologies for the newbie question - my husband and I have decided that
we both need to have cell phones. Nothing fancy, just basic calling,
tri-mode, good reception are our main priorities. We only use the
phone to check in during our various commutes, etc.
I've had a Verizon plan with an old Motorola for 3 years now, and am
unfamiliar with the new plans. Can one get two phones on one plan for
the same basic fee, or is there always a second-phone charge? Can
anyone recommend a plan for 2 phones? We'll just be using the phones
occasionally during the week, and for our long-distance during the
hours/days when we have free minutes.
Any rec's for a basic phone model with good reception, tri-mode?

Sally,
Verizon's customer service is helpful in these areas. Adding a 2nd phone on
a Family Share plan will always cost you another $20. In most markets the
cheapest plan is $35, but you might want more features like Unlimited
Calling to each other, and that puts you at $40 for the plan + $20 for the
2nd phone. You might get more minutes with separate plans. But $60 is a
good deal for Unlimited calls between each other.
They often do "2 for 1" deals, and the phones they offer for that deal are
very good. No users come here to complain about their 'cheapest' phones.

I just added a 3200 to my basic plan (4400) & found it to be equally as
good. The offers in my area these days are two 3200 phones for $19.95 with
new service but I only wish they offered a decent flip non-color tri mode
phone. The color screens are impossible to see in full sunlight.

If you're happy with your current phone there's no reason to buy
another one. Just get one for your husband and add that phone to your
current account as a family plan. Make sure they give you unlimited
calling between the two numbers. (If your phone doesn't give you good
reception it's, of course, time to get another phone.) Add minutes,
change plan, etc. as needed/if needed.
