I think the AMD Palomino will be out Q2 2001. If the AMD Palomino is out, which type of motherboard does it use? A Socket A or something else? Will our Socket A motherboard be usable once the Palomino is out? Or should we buy a new mobo?

I wish somebody would answer my questions.

i'll try

the new chip will use socket a design, but i'll be buying a new mobo that supports the 133*2 bus and ddr ram.

I don't think the kt133 mobo's out there right now (a7v, kt7 raid, etc..) can hit a 133*2 fsb to take advantage of the palomino chip.

could be wrong though :)

The Palomino should really shine on a DDR mobo, but it will still run (although crippled) on just about any socket A mobo.

I have read that one mobo would be the KT133A (A7V133) but all it does is <i>"pump the FSB up to 133MHz, there is no support for DDR memory"</i>, as Grizely1 put it.

I suppose I(We) need to find a mobo that brings out the full potential of the Palomino as well as utilizing DDR memory.

Now, where can we find that? :(

I have just read the article<A HREF="http://www.tomshardware.com/mainboard/01q1/010104/index.html" target="_new">"The Three Musketeers - Athlon Platforms For 133 MHz FSB"</A> which you pointed out. I guess they are not out in the international market yet so we have to settle with other motherboards even for a Palomino.

At the end of the article, Tom mentioned the upcoming VIA KT266 chipset which will support DDR memory. Still, I guess it will be a long wait. :frown:

I wonder if it is worth the wait. I wonder if this VIA KT266 chipset would bring out the best in the AMD Palomino. Furthermore, which motherboard would use the VIA KT266? My guess is that ASUS would use the VIA KT266 since they are currently using the VIA KT133A for their A7V133. Maybe they will call it the ASUS A7V266.

Well it's just my speculation.

I was wrong in my previous post. I said there that it is A7V266 but actually it is the A7M266. I found it in the <A HREF="http://www.asus.com.tw/whatsnew/whatsnew2010.html" target="_new">What's New at ASUS</A> and they will start shipping in quantity by Q4 2000. I guess it is out in the market by now.

Sorry about my previous posts. It's just now that I've learned of this.

So, does anyone have the A7M266 already? How was it? Have you any trouble getting it to work?

Hmmm. I wonder if brings out the best in the upcoming Palomino.

Problem is, now matter how good the performance (speed), if your computer is down several hours a month because of problems with the chipset, it's junk. I'd take the performance hit with the ALI chipset before I'd buy another VIA. Wondering which one will have the most flaws, the AMD chipset or the VIA. Wish Micron would introduce something SOON!
