I have Windows XP Pro, SP2 and I cannot enable peer to peer networking. This has always been a problem on this machine. I could never get Kazaa to work, for example, but I didn't mind much. Lately, however, I have started telecommuting once a week and I communicate with my office via ICQ. It would be nice to be able to send files over ICQ instead of email.

On other systems I have seen an option to enable P2P networking in the User Accounts area, but not on my system. I run as an administrative account without the login screen, i.e., when I boot up it goes straight to my desktop.

Any suggestions on how to enable P2P networking will be appreciated.

If you have firewall software or a home router you are going to need to open/forward some ports to your computer to make it possible to do peer to peer file transfers. You will need to open ports 1024-65535, pretty much every port on your whole machine. I think that crazy security hole isn't worth the convienience of file transfers in ICQ.

Another option with less of a security risk would be to setup an external proxy server. In other words putting a computer completely external (given an internet IP and isn't behind any firewall, a linux machine is best) and using it as a middle man for the file transfer.

Here is more info about those options on the ICQ site: <A HREF="http://www.icq.com/icqtour/firewall/netadmin.html" target="_new">http://www.icq.com/icqtour/firewall/netadmin.html</A>
