I am a newbie to computers & to firewalls and just got a cable connection so I would like to install a firewall that is:

(1) Easy to use and would not freeze my computer or messup other applications on my PC.

(2) Preferably free but would surely pay for it if it provides very essential features that are not in free version.

(3) Feedback from people who had bad experiences with certain firewalls and which one they switched to and are happy with it.

(4) Do I need a router as well as a firewall software to get additional protection or just a router or firewall alone would protect me?

Router firewalls are the best in my opinion because you possess a device outside of your PC. Meaning that all of the scans and attacks will hit your router first. Now if you are streaming something and someone jumps the stream then there is very little one can do. I really do not like Zone Alarm because it bothers me about every program that is lauched. I have been using Panda and have liked it.

Nothing beats ZoneAlarm in Firewall field (I am not talking about lazy people that comment about "every program bothers me", that happens only once that the program is asking for internet connection (at least I know what I let out and what not, otherwize what the Firewall is for?)

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...
