So...for the first time in...forever...I started gaming with my hubby online. He's beside himself with joy!!

Do any of you hard-core gamers have wives who play as well?

Nope.
Used to have a girlfriend who played Tetris though, she sucked bigtime.
We broke up just because of that.

you're kidding right?
wow...

and so...how important IS it that a significant other share this particular interest?

Reply to girlnamedlou

If it´s like she´s into knitting and stuff and tells me that "Now I have played a game with you, now you have to knit with me"...then I just leave it alone, I wont bug her.

If not, then it´s "so-so" important, I mean...you have to have some common interests otherwise the relationship eventually will be doomed (more or less).
There´s so many other things that I value higher than getting a girl that fancy computers...

Reply to Jake75

I know...if the interest is only offered as a token with the expectation of reciprocation...it loses something.

And you're right...there are WAY more important things. I'm very grateful that my hubby and I are so compatible in SO many other ways. We've been going through some rough times, and me getting interested in gaming has given us an alternative level on which to communicate...a renewed spark as it were.

So...I was just wondering how other couples handle this aspect of a relationship.

But anyway with game did you play?

I play over my own LAN with friends sometimes... but there are only 2 PCs in the house that can handle first-person games... working on my third one though.

And I still want to orginaze a LAN party with around 5-8 friends... that would be really cool, as there aren't much LAN parties around here.

Nah, all I expect is a little bit of understanding from a lady. That is to say, whenever I "just stare at the screen" at home and suddenly burst into uncontrollable laughter or start exploring the extremities of my vocabulary. Other mutually shared interests are definitely a must, though. But I'm single, so my opinions hardly count.

I played Everquest. Having just built my first computer, we now have TWO mostly operational machines. (it's the old one that's [peep]ing up...not the one I just built, thank God...the new one is GREAT!)

Anyway...it was really fun. It's always been a source of contention...how much time he spends gaming. However, after getting sucked into the EQ world for over 2 hours yesterday BEFORE HE EVEN GOT HOME...I'm beginning to understand the draw.

Reply to girlnamedlou

Cool, and what will be next? Hunting eachother in Quake3 or Unreal Tournament?

BTW this is the first time that I heard about a woman building a PC... very nice. There was someone who stated she was a girl and asked something about overclocking months ago (don't ask why I remember it... I have good memory  ). I don't think I know a woman with much interest in computers in real-life :frown: .

It's been my experience that females tend to play around more with software applications than with hardware. I LOVE computers...but hardware is definitely new for me. I got tired of the crappy quality of computers that we've been plagued with over the years.

So...I convinced my man to trust me and let me build one. So far it kicks ass.

And...I'm eyeballing my OTHER PC as it's such a POS...I just don't know WHAT to do for it!! It locks up ALL the time, and we had the mobo replaced, the hard drive replaced...on and on (by the company...not by me). I don't know...pain in the arse.

Okay...done venting.

Reply to girlnamedlou

And as for other games...one thing at a time.
I'm still having issues with getting dizzy while running through the freakin' forest! (screen bouncing and I have to avert my eyes before I yak!) AND, I fell off the tree platform thing! Rank amature...I know.

So, until I can get used to the controls...EQ will be it.

I'm a pretty *vocal* person...so hubby cracks up when I screech as I'm taunting and poking orcs...it's funny. He's "power-leveling" me...so I'm moving up WAY faster than my abilities, but he's taking care of me.

It's pretty cool.

Reply to girlnamedlou

Interesting... the women I know tend to do as little with computers as possible. The only use if for internet, typing and chatting and if something goes wrong they need help from other... but maybe the region where I live is just living in the Dark Ages.
When I just started working with computers I mostly discovered things with software... until I got addicted to hardware and tweaking. I first started to help friends building their comps and after I learned enough I builded my own self-bought PC (bought an assembled before, but I did the hardware selection. I also build one with some old hardware).
And then I started to get addicted to overclocking... I can tell more if you're interested in my bla bla.

But if you tell us more about the PC you got problems with (hardware specs and OS) we can try to help you solve it.

Well you don't want to know what my first experience with a real 3D game (Unreal) was... man I didn't like it at all.
Until I grew some older and my younger brother (always better in games then me :frown: ) started playing Soldier Of Fortune... I really liked watching that game and started playing and practicing too. Resulting in a small addiction to first-person shooters.
But I always have to get used to a game to feel comfortable in it.

heh...I know PLENTY of women like that. I think it's fear disguised by disinterest. Or..maybe it's just disinterest, I don't know.

What I DO know is that as soon as I discovered that I could MAKE something that was exactly what I wanted and would probably work <i>better</i> than what I could buy...I wanted to do it. I researched it a lot, and read and read...and then bought all the components from sites that were recommended here on THG. Putting it together was a total rush...and pushing that power button the first time (made the hubby do it...LOL) was exhilarating. When no error messages came up, I was pretty pleased w/myself.

It was great. I DO want to know about overclocking eventually...but when I saw that I might have to *fuse* something, I balked. I'm sure that's next...

As for my *old* computer...we bought it from a Compucare (US chain) store about 2½ years ago.

Specs:
ASUS A7V-E KT133
"GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE 47" (not sure how to find more info than that)
Onboard sound card
GeForce 2 MX400 video card
Win 98SE (we do NOT have a disk...we had ME, and then a tech where I worked loaded 98SE on it)

We connect via LAN card.

Problems:
Locks up ALL the time while online
Currently will not run simple kids games...gets to opening screen, then seizes
Sometimes it just blinks and twitches for the hell of it.

We've replaced the mobo, 3 CD-ROM's, RAM, and I THINK we replaced the hard-drive once (Thank GOD for the warranty!)

Anyway...we just feel like it's jynxed..and so everything that goes wrong with it gets amplified to major proportions. It's lucky I haven't sent it to wingding for a "tune-up"!

ANY help at all would be appreciated.

Reply to girlnamedlou

We'll play, but she doesn't like first person shooters.

<font color=red>I'd like to dedicate this post to all my friends, family, and fans. Without them this post would never have been possible. Thank you!</font color=red>

The usual thing is to make sure you have the latest and greatest BIOS and chipset drivers for the motherboard, as well as latest drivers for graphics card, sound card, LAN card... all the works. Here are some pointers:

<A HREF="http://www.asus.com/mb/socketa/a7v-e/specification.htm" target="_new">Mobo specs</A>, <A HREF="http://download.asus.com.tw/mb_dl_menu.asp?Status=31&l1=1&l2=10&l3=1&mid=4" target="_new">Latest BIOS for A7V-E KT133</A>, <A HREF="http://www.asus.com.tw/inside/Techref/bios-flash.html" target="_new">BIOS flashing instructions</A>, <A HREF="http://www.asus.com.tw/download/mbdriver/mb-flash.htm" target="_new">BIOS flashing tools</A>.
<A HREF="http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2" target="_new">Latest drivers for VIA chipsets</A> (including KT133).
<A HREF="http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp" target="_new">Nvidia graphics drivers</A> (Detonators).
<A HREF="http://www.cmedia.com.tw/edl8738.htm" target="_new">Drivers for the onboard sound chip</A> (C-Media CMI-8738).

Might help, chances are that the techie didn't install latest drivers. Be careful with the BIOS update, though. Interrupted flashing or flashing a wrong BIOS file can ruin the mobo. Checking for any 98SE updates isn't such a bad idea either.

Could also be a bad power supply. If the comp is unstable and stuff (HD, CD, mobo) is actually <i>breaking</i> at that rate, I'd place the blame on the PSU.

verily its is great that thou can bond and share experiences, even such tidings as gaming.

My current Lady, bless her heart, likes porn too. the merry lass is recommending titles for ME to download!

I hast yet to introduce her to gaming, but things do look fortuitious thus far.

Overclocking can be a rush, but much grief can be laid low by doing it the methodical way.

Computer gaming with spouse?

Man, you gotta be kidding!

I used to do lan games with my girls: red alert 1 and 2, quake 2 and some racing games. It was fun. We don't anymore. I don't even game anymore. Lost all interest in it. Teh wife plays "scrabble". I chat and e-mail as my 12 yearold. She downloads music and burns her own cds...:) Smart cookie...:)

When teh wife and I are together, we usually have sex rather then anything else. Have been doing that every night for many weeks now. Dunno what the f*ck is going on, but I know it's me. I'm going crazy, that's all I guess...:) I don't even care if I come or not, just want to get at her body and see if I can squeeze it into mine...never works , of course , but just trying makes me feel good. I also constantly see other women's faces when I get down on her.

I hold her head in my hands and pass my fingers through her blond hair. That turns both of us on...:) Then I put my lips to her neck and taste her from one side to the other, damn she likes that too...:)

oh! ya! gaming must be fun with hubby!

aahahahahahahhaa

The joy will not last.
The first time you beat him at his favourite game he'll have a sissy fit. And that will be it for the online games with the hubby.

Board games, card games, computer games, kids games my wife kicks my ass in all of them. We don't play games anymore because it is too stressful for me. I get really pathetic when I have a sissy fit.
Thankfully she still can't beat me at the billiard hall.
I am the eight ball champion.

Same suggestions as Napoleon but also:
Check if you got IRQ and/or DMA problems... you can find this with msinfo32.exe under hardware.
You can possible monitor temps and voltages with the Asus PC-Probe... but I don't like that one so I suggest MBM 5 (<A HREF="http://mbm.livewiredev.com" target="_new">http://mbm.livewiredev.com</A> ). If your voltages are way out of spec it is almost sertain it is the PSU causing it, if you're not sure post the voltages and temps here.

zyprd...he read your post

<i>The first time you beat him at his favourite game he'll have a sissy fit. And that will be it for the online games with the hubby</i>

...and said..."not likely".

LOL...he's been playing EQ for about 3 years now. And although I'm the hardware person, AND I excel at regular "office-type" applications..he's the game god of the house.

Although...I DO recall being able to play Disney's Tarzan better than him...

Reply to girlnamedlou

okay...I've downloaded all the drivers AND the MBM 5 appy.
I'm going to run IT first, to see if it's the power supply. If I can't understand the results..I'll post 'em.

If THAT's not it, I'll update the drivers and see if that helps. I found the instructions for updating the BIOS in my mobo manual...so I think I can do that well enough.

My question is...at what point can you say "Oh...that's definitely your mobo" or "it's the hard drive...no doubt".

OR...is there EVER a time when you can know that for sure?

jeez...it was so much easier just to build a new one...

Reply to girlnamedlou

*evil grin*
Building a new rig and getting the OS to boot is the <i>fun</i> part. Soon enough, the neverending arms race for latest BIOS, drivers, virus scanners, OS upgrades and app/game patches starts. Not to mention plugging the gaping security loopholes in the OS, IE, Office, Outlook... *sigh*

I nuked 'em all!! LOL

Seriously...jihiggs...you're going to NEED to get some other interests. The more interests one has, the more interesting one is to the opposite sex. I am by NO means only interested in computers. I homeschool my kids, I read a lot, I love crafty [-peep-], I'm a good cook, I'm PHENOMENAL in the sack, I make a kick ASS latte, and I like to do outdoors stuff.

It's all about variety. My husband has a lot of interests too...though he games a lot...he's also a spectacular fisherman, and wonderful Dad, he grills a mean steak, he's a sensitive and muy adventurous lover, he plays soccer on a co-ed team, we play softball together (and he's really good at it)...the list goes on...but I shant bore you with my "Ode to Hubby".

Having one interest, although you're probably EXCEPTIONAL at it, will NOT lead you to find a twoo wuv.

Sign up for taekwondo. You'll love it, and you'll meet cool chicks.

Trust the Lady of the Forum...(hey...I kind of like THAT one too!)

Taekwondo is all about using sine waves to create power, not sheer force, that is why it attracts women. It's also the roughest on your joints. EQ is a full time job. If you are gonna be successful at it you'll find your self playing for 8hrs a day. tsk tsk i'm glad I got away from that.

CS? Not familiar...
Until Everquest, I only ever played a couple Nintendo games, Crash Bandicoot & other kids' games, OH, and once upon a time I would play "Rampart" on Nintendo with hubby. But, I used to get pissed off cuz I couldn't rebuild my castle in time & he would just kick my ass...so I stopped playing! LOL sore loser, I know.

EQ is pretty fun. Yahiko is right...it's a full time job. I created my own female character...and she's pretty awesome, so there's a sense of ownership there. And, the interaction with other players online is both enjoyable and frustrating at times.

We'll see how long it lasts...but I'm doing ok with it. At least I'm not falling off stuff anymore! lol

I used to play on the Mithaniel Marr server. I was in a guild, and had 3 characters 20+ but I haven't played in 4 months so I've forgotten how to do even the basics. Lol. I used to really be into trade skillz. That's what I found to be fun. Killing stuff got monotenous so trade skillz was a fun side thing to do.
