Need help with online play for madden 11 ps3

I just bought a ps3 yesterday and one of the games I bought was Madden 11. The game is fun but when I try to play online it keeps asking that I "Enter the Playstation Network Card number or promotion code. What is that? Isnt online gaming on the ps3 supposed to be free? All of my other games work fine online black ops and street fighter iv. Can anyone help?

nevermind, I found the answer... The code was on the back of the book the game came with. They should tell you that though. The screen didnt even mention it.
