Random FPS drops

One of those classical problems.
When playing games FPS drops down to 3-5 for ~1s and then comes back up.
While that happens, HDD emits a 'crackling' noise.

I know it can be any number of things (slow HDD when accessing pagefile/spyware working the the background etc.etc.), just wondering if it's normal that it truly happens completely randomly as in, it doesn't matter how much action is happening on-screen?
Sometimes you can be standing still and this stutter still happens while there may be a ton of effects and action happening and it works just fine.

Any common solutions?
Thanks

Have you defragmented the drive ?
Also dwl and install malwarebytes,- which will check for virus/malware

Yea, defrag and malware removal were the 1st things I tried..
It's probably just an ancient HDD accessing pagefile really slowly (I don't have my HDD partitioned)..
Oh well

crackling noise? Sounds a bit like the click of death to me. If so, you're going to need a new hdd soon. Run some diagnostics on it to see if anything is failed/corrupted.

Then maybe an hdd change might be required, as first things might be virus and fragmentation which isn't the case here..
