can someone educate me a little here?

I am putting together a system with the abit kt7a-raid mobo which has Raid.
This particular board has 4 ide ports that each support ultra dma ata/100
What are those pci card controllers for? Look below.

UltraDMA66/100/100Raid Controller ¡PSupport DMA mode 3 / 4
This one was listed at pricewatch.com
Do i need one of these to use the raid features of my mobo?

I havent ordered it yet, its all bookmarked and ready to go with a few clicks though.
thanks for your help.

No, you don't need a PCI card for that mobo. The same functionality is built onto the motherboard. The 3rd and 4th IDE connectors act just like a PCI Raid controller. There is even a driver for the HPT controller chip.

Update:
The builtin RAID controller only supports RAID 0 and RAID 1. The PCI controller may support more. Raid 0 is for disk striping (two drive look like one very fast one). Raid 1 is for the 1st level of data security, two drives with the same information plus error correction capability.

You'll have to ask someone else for more information on the other classes of RAID.
