One to one PS3 LAN connection problem

I have tried to connect via a local Ethernet switch to my friends PS3 with my PS3, I made two normal staight network cables and i assigned two static ip's to the consoles and i tried to Lan GT5 BUT this didnt work at all. Can this be done and if so, please help me

I don't think consoles do LAN gaming. Everything has to go through the PSN (XBL for XBox).
