Xbox, gold membership, internet issue

Hello,
my new xbox connected to the internet just fine with the free 1 month gold membership that I got with the console. However, now the month is up and I am trying to add 3 months gold membership which I have bought and paid for, I can't as it says I need to be connected to the internet in order to redeem code, which I can't do as it won't connect to net . . . . . help please!!!!
