Fullscreen games minimizing and not maximizing to fullscreen

Hey, I've got this weird problem. When I play a fullscreen game like Far Cry 2 or Crysis and alt-tab away the game won't re-enter fullscreen mode when I start playing again.

I thought I had it narrowed down to just dx10 games, because I'm not getting any trouble from CS:S, but Stalker CoP and Battlefield BC2 make the transition perfectly. So I'm stumped, any ideas?

Just a note: Most of the games don't actually minimize, they just go into window mode and i can see the taskbar. Maybe this is a new alt-tab behavior? Anyone know if any Windows settings exist to change that?
