I have a HP scanjet 4P which is connected through a scsI card/cable
(Adaptec). I am running XP Pro. I plan on getting a new computer and
am wondering if it's possible to get a usb cable to connect it. I
don't want to go through all the work to install a scsi board (if it's
at all even possible).

Has anyone done this and is there such a usb cable available.

I do not think that the 4p has a USB port. The only possible USB option would
be to use some sort of SCSI to USB converter. I doubt that would work simply
because HP's ScanJet software, flimsy as it is, would not know what to do when
confronted with a 4p attached via USB. The different versions of DeskScan are
often challenged to run properly with a scanner attached with the expected
interface.

Re: SCSI... Don't be reluctant to use it under XP. As long as you have a PCI
SCSI card, no problem with driver support, etc. For all practical purposes,
this means an Adaptec 2900-series SCSI card with 50-pin narrow SCSI external
connector. If you already have one of these, you are good to go. If not, they
are cheap and easy to acquire. Using DeskScan software under XP may prove to be
a bigger challenge than getting the adapter and scanner installed and recognized
by XP... Ben Myers

I am presently using it with DeskScan on my desktop and have no
problems.

I know that the 4p does not have a usb port. I was hoping a could use
a scsi to usb converter.

I misread your original posting.

If it's not broken, don't try to fix it.

As I stated before, DeskScan would be extremely unlikely to work with the 4p
over a SCSI-USB converter of some sort. DeskScan is problematic enough all by
itself. Don't confuse it... Ben Myers
