Hi-

I just got a new (to me) car and it has an integrated Motorola phone,
an analong one. It was put in in 1997. I'd like it to ring when my
handheld LG VX3200 does, so if I'm driving I can talk handsfree and
have voice-activated dialing. A friend of mine said that I could
"clone" my car phone so it thinks it is my handheld. He showed me
these steps but I'm not sure if I'm programming it right becuase it
doesn't ring and I can't call out...

1)press FCN, press 0000000000000 (13 zeros)
2)Press RCL
-phone displays "01"
3)Enter sys ID press ** (my SID is 00154)
4)Enter Area COde press **
5)enter cell number press **
6)enter station class mark 05 press ** (what is this and is 05 right?)
7)enter acsess overload class (0+2nd lass didgit of cellnumber) Press
** (is this right?)
8)enter group id mark 05 press ** (I enter 05 here like it says)
9)enter 6 didgit security code 000000 press ** (this works)
10)enter 3 didgit unlock code 123 press ** (this works)
11)enter paging channel 0333 press ** (what is this, and my phone
keeps reverting back to 0334, am I supposed to have 0334 instead of
0333?)
12)press*
13)press*

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks

This is a logical question. You'll probably get quite a few replies
warning you of the dire consequences of cellular cloning and how crazy
you would be to try it. Here are a few simple facts.

1. The code you have been given will allow you to change the
programming for the phone, but has no effect on the Electronic Serial
Number(ESN). For the wireless provider to service a given instrument,
the ESN must match the data in the company switch. This, in addition
to having the correct phone number and SID programmed (that's what the
code you typed will do).

2. It is illegal to clone cell phones. It's also illegal to drive 70
in a 65 zone. I've never seen any case where an end user of a phone
cloned to their own account has been successfully (or even
unsuccessfully) prosecuted. However, cloning an ESN requires some
special equipment and special know-how. The people who do get in
trouble, legally, are those who provide cloned phones and cloning
services. They've disappeared from the web and just about from
anywhere else. So, unless you can do it yourself, it's rough to get it
done.

3. If there is any problem with the cloned phone, the provider won't
fix it (obviously, you wouldn't tell them about it). You'd have to get
another phone and clone it. Also, unless you've got an analog phone
that supports it, you won't have Caller ID or several other features.

4. A good hands-free and antenna system will give you good coverage.
Not quite as good as an old 3-watt analog, but good.

Of course, it's nice to be able to use a built-in phone, but it's
generally not a viable option.

Good luck.

What this boils own to is, you can program the phone with your account
information, but it still won't work unless you either call CS or go online
and change the ESN associated with your account. And if you do that, then
your handheld won't work any more. It is not possible to have two phones
both active on the same number at the same time.
