Bumping up seeking some assistance....

I have a Gateway Performance 500 purchased in 9/99. The motherboard is an Intel Jabil (aka Tabor III, part #4000510, WS440BX). I have flashed the BIOS with an update from Gateway's UK site that is more recent than the BIOS available in the US. Does anyone know what is the highest multiplier this MB will support? According to the BIOS readme, processors up to 1200 mhz are recognized, but I am not completely confident of the compatibility with coppermine processors. Any expert advice would be appreciated.

I am hoping to make a quick upgrade to a 1 ghz P3 now that prices have dropped on intel processors. Anyone made this type of upgrade on a similar system.

Whoa, slow down before you plop down $$$ on a 1GHz for this machine.

First, this machine has a BX chipset, it would only support 100 MHz Bus processors. To run a Processor that requires a 133 bus would result in overclocking the graphics controller, which can shorten it's life (if it works).

Second, we do not know if this machine would support the voltage of a coopermine. Coopermine processors run at a lower voltage than early Pentium 3 (Katmai). Some boards do not support this lower voltage. Since the computer is new, I would tend to think that it would support the lower voltage but that is no guarantee. If worse comes to worse, you can use a slocket adapter that can control the voltage.

I am not sure that the 1ghz processor runs at 100 MHz bus, I strongly believe it runs at 133. I think the fastest P3 at 100 FSB is an 850 MHz processor.

There are 1 gig P3's with 100 fsb. Mostly they are mostly slot 1 chips though, i have never seen a 1 gig fc-pga for sale though. Pricewatch $312 slot1 secc2 100 fsb retail boxed. So the chips are out there, its just a matter of making sure the board supports the lower core voltage of the coppermines.

The P3-1000E Slot 1 processors (E = 100 mhz FSB) are out there (buy.com, econopc.com, etc.) and, since prices are down from the stratosphere, I nice little 500 mhz boost sounds good if my MB will permit it.
