Has this ever happened before? At what point do they call it terrorism?

I don't think that this type of situation has come up before. And I think it would be fair to call this domestic terrorism.

Its moments like these I just love living in a country with nice tough gun laws.

Some mentally challenged frootloop who probably thinks its a fun game of unreal tournament with the sniper rifle.

What if it's a foriegner? Guerilla warfare? Imagine a dozen snipers loose wreaking havoc.

That would be a horrible situation. I mean I've been in a country when the government was overthrown, when there was a military coupe, when a volcano was spewing ash over the city, and a list of a few dozen other things. But I never really had to worry about terrorist activity. Though Ecuador is now getting to the state where it is unsafe to travel at night due to increased terrorist activity.

Scarey yes.
But i still think its a lone frootloop (with possible accomplice with even less braincells)

Never heard about things like this before... but it is really scary, especially when you live in that town.

Man this is what you can get when you have almost none gun laws (although if someone really wants it he can always get a gun somewhere).

There is TOOOOOO much freedom in America. No sane people will ever need a gun. And certainly no sane people will ever need a sniper gun. Unfortunately this is true only in a proper state.

I think that the american policy for guns is wrong. Sometimes having a small gun is advisable. But if an individual is able to buy a sniper gun - even in exceptional conditions, well that means the state is NOT able to protect the individual.
TOOOO much freedom smells like anarchy - a system where anybody will make his own justice.

These kinds of events MUST be prevented. It is not enough to kill the criminal. He is probably just some kind of retarded or pure criminal mind. Killing him is like killing a mosquito. In the meantime he has still killed 8 people.
This killer has proved that there are some BIG holes in the system. This is what people should be afraid of. This is what people should try to repair. Revenge has its own purpose, but it will buy nothing on the long term.

A pistol? I hardly believe that. With a pistol he is easily detectable. A pistol makes a lot of noise. I don't think that you can kill 8 people in the street with a pistol a get away with it.

If my memory is right the American army is using M16 as their standard solder's gun.

An M16 also fires a supersonic .223 round. Which means one of two things:

1) He's loading his own ammo, and dropping the bullet mass and charge down to subsonic levels, and using a silencer.

2) He's not using an M16.

Either way, I'd rather see the other 300,000 people in the city returning fire when they spot the sniper. I feel considerable more secure in a crowd of people, all with concealed handguns, than in a crowd of sheep with just one disguised wolf.

Mutually Assured Destruction is stupid as [-peep-]. But it works; so it's not stupid...

What I don't understand is, if M16 are rifles, how can he be able to snipe so well if they don't have a sniper visor scope?
Or do they have such add-on?

Lol, I had a sniper pistol in Deus Ex, it was the sickest thing.
M16 are accurate actually, so no scope is necessary sometimes. Oh, BTW, M16 are used for army training, in combat, M4A1's are used.

and there are many bolt action "varmint" rifles available in 223 caliber they are ideal as relatively short range sniper rifles ( the US army uses the old model 70 30 cal and now is using the single shot 50 cal capable of kills in ranges of well over a mile or 3 for sniper duty)

the average joe can shoot accuratly with no scope up to about 50 yards, with a little practice. i saw on this gun show, this show shooter shot a balloon at 300 yards with a snub nose pistol.

That sounds like "Jelly" Kelly.

All those articles and cartoons about someone shooting a handfull of quarters, dead-center, in the air? That's the guy.

He said he could see the bullet leave the muzzle...

thats not his name, maybe an alias or something. i saw one where he shot a bb with a 45 in the air, like it was a clay pidgeon. he also shot a playing card in half horizontaly, then he shot it in half in the air. now THAT is impressive!

d00d, more gun laws COULDN'T help, as there would be enough black market guns left that any INTELLIGENT maniac could find one!

Well it seems to work in australia (mostly).
But then again we have allways had fairly strict laws, so the number of black market weapons is pretty low.
And getting rid of them would probably be a greater challenge than inacting tougher gun laws.

As it stands, looks like you guys will have to live with the odd frootloop and sniper rifle.

An M16, M4A1, AK-47, etc. are all illegal as they are considered assault rifles. Thus, this dude is either military, or he got it on the black market, or both.

A relatively small problem. One of my original ideas about this nut is that he MAY be an anti-gun activist trying to "fight fire with fire" so to speak by raising public momentum against gun ownership rights...

AK47 semi-auto is legal to own, but illegal to sell. It was a legal sporting rifle until a few years ago when Clinton passed a law to ban them from the market.

And why should people own assault rifles? Why not legalize grenades and napalm? Can I mine my front yard for intruders as well? I think a turret in front of each home will definitely reduce home burgleries.

Being the devils advocate....

Any real numbers out there on guns? Sure the NRA has theirs, but are there any solid, non-biased, numbers out there?

Where I come from, nearly everybody who lives outside the city has a hunting rifle. Which is probably what this guy is using. And noone gets shot. The last shooting was 15 years ago when some guy walked into a store and blew his wife away point blank. He could have just as easily slit her throat at that distance, so taking away his gun would have done nothing to prevent the murder.

yes... somewhere between bucketloads and shitloads of Illegal semi & fully automatic guns of rifle class or better.

You can get a version of an M16 that is legal. It's slightly different, but for all intents and purposes, it's an M16.

Anyone hear about how they had an "expert" on the today show who said that the only way this guy could have learned to snipe people like this is by learning off of counterstrike??? What a retard.

Oh yeah, that dude must be so l337xxors if he learned it of cs. The person who said that is a moron, they need something to blame it on, and what better thing than shooting games. Funny part is that I play it a lot, and I would never have the heart to even injure a child or innocent person (unless I was being attacked), and cs defintly does not teach u to shoot. There's a dot on the screen, put it over target, burst fire. Yay, u got $300 for killing the dude. Furthermore, that game teaches nothing about recoil; ak's are very easily held steady, unlike how they go all over the place in cs. CS definetly doesn't teach u to shoot, and what proof have we that that guy even played it?

Everyone wants to find something to blame. In America, they want to find something to blame, remove/change that one thing, and then never have to worry about it again.

Maintenance is never an issue in America. People want a pill, that just f*cking cures the whole problem, and it never comes back. They don't *want* to have to walk/jog/swim. They just want to be able to do one thing, and walk away.

This is the deal with everything in America. Firearms, kids, Afghanistan, Iraq, income taxes, vehicle registration, computers, snipers, planes-flying-into-buildings, annoying neighbors, dirty magazines sold down at Circle K...

everything.

And it just doesn't work like that. It has worked that way in about 10 out of the last 1,000,000,000,000 issues that have come up over the past 2000 years.

There has to be maintenance. There NEEDS to be maintenance. Everything starts going to sh~t when there ISN'T maintenance.

This is a problem of society. In this case, it's American society, but I can branch it out to at least 2 other countries right off the top of my head. And that's strictly from references in this thread, alone.

Anyway, that was my little rant. I'm going to be quiet now...

LOL, ok, well, if you look at various societies, you see a cycle of increasing violence/corruption/crime/imoral behavior. Then you see a breaking point and a spiritual/social movement, things get great, then the cycle starts again. It's even happened in the US before.

The problem is that laws stick in the U.S. So any laws we try to enact to resolve such issue do more to hurt the rights of future generations than to stem current problems.

One thing that scews the whole equation is mass media. Do you think this guy would be popping people off if he wasn't getting on TV for it?
