my board came with 4.28

now at giga-byte.com
4.23 is new i have also seen 4.25

which is the newest here?

My 4.28 the readme thing says december 2000....

I don't know witch mb you have, but i got a VP6 and downloaded 4.29 only a few days ago.

Check out <A HREF="http://www.viahardware.com" target="_new">http://www.viahardware.com</A> for latest 4 in 1. You can also go to <A HREF="http://www.viatech.com" target="_new">http://www.viatech.com</A> to get direct to the source (fewer choices and less explanation). Your mobo support site is probably behind on what they call the "latest" either because they haven't tested them (and therefore may not support them?), or they just don't have the resources to keep their site up to date.

On what board? When I tried 4.28 on my 2k/Asus CUV4-X it totally wiped out my installation (could not recover/last known configuration or safe mode).

I'm a little reluctant to use VIA drivers right now...

4.28 where beta's, always beta's. 429 maybe better. Really the 426-429 where addressing AMD/Via problems vice Intel problems, so on your motherboard the 425a maybe the best for your use.
